After travelling to Africa for two months and spending some time in poverty-stricken areas, I returned feeling a mixture of emotions, I was completely dissatisfied, angry, and deflated with the state of our world. Frustrated with the thought of spending the rest of my life doing something I didn’t care for. Yet, so energised with ideas on how I would change the world!Katie Liew // Founder
Consequently, I had rediscovered my passion and immersed myself in research, volunteering and trying to understand life. Not of mine, but of those less fortunate. I was (and still am) committed to international aid, but at the same token, I knew for me, charity was to begin at home.
Ground+Co is our first beachhead strategy to create jobs, by training and employing those most marginalised to become baristas.
Our coffee cart Billie, also provides an opportunity for our customers to engage directly with our employees, providing a greater, more tangible connection to the cause.
With continued support, employees will move onto employment in partnership with other hospitality establishments, to provide long-term and sustainable employment beyond Ground+Co.
By the first year of operations, we expect to have impacted the lives of at least ten people experiencing, or at-risk of homelessness. Through providing training and employment, our baristas would be considered highly employable, with training and at least six months’ experience.
Ground+Co is an initiative of The Underground Collaborative, a social enterprise founded in June 2017 that provides employment and housing solutions for the homeless, at-risk and disadvantaged. We know the task will not be easy, but we are committed to making a sustainable and impactful difference, and instilling positive change.
